Attorney Hesse Attended "Fundamentals of DWI Investigation & Enforcement" Course

|

Attorney D. Chris Hesse has long been renowned for his exceptional knowledge of Texas’ criminal laws, including DWI laws, and he was recently able to pass some of that knowledge on by attending a training course for law enforcement officers. The course, entitled “Fundamentals of DWI Investigation & Enforcement,” was an eight hour training session designed to help law enforcement officers better-recognize the signs of intoxication and impaired driving so that they are more accurate with their arrests and fewer people are falsely accused of driving while intoxicated.

Course Contents

This training course was full of information for officers regarding improving recognition of signs of impairment while driving as well as better prepare cases for prosecution. Better-equipped officers provide better law enforcement and deterring to intoxicated motorists, helping prevent intoxicated-motorist accidents and saving more lives.

One of the toughest issues facing law enforcement officers when making DUI arrests is establishing probable cause. To do this, officers have long-relied upon field sobriety tests. Officers are all required to undergo Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Practitioner training to learn how to properly conduct these tests, including things to look for and how to overcome confirmation bias, one of the leading causes of false positives and unjustified arrests. This course provided supplemental training to point out further mistakes and issues even experienced law enforcement officers make that can hinder their ability to properly apply the law and make justified arrests.

The course also provided supplemental training for the SFST Refresher and Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcements (ARIDE) courses. When combined with the SFST Refresher course, this course granted officers 16 total hours of training credit towards their requirements. Kevin Ryan was the lead instructor for the course.
